At first, the world didn’t know what to make of him. But later they would call Le Corbusier the most important architect of the 20th century. His work changed the neighborhoods and skylines of cities around the world. The Swiss-born French designer was a pioneer of modernism and favored hard lines in everything he created from international skyscrapers to office chairs. And his groundbreaking theories on art and design changed more than just buildings and furniture. Rectangular watches were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 30s, thanks largely to the revolutionary vision of LeCorbusier. Wristwatches followed fashion and reflected the taste of the times. And LeCorbusier’s thoroughly modern International Style soon overtook Art Nouveau and Art Deco as the aesthetic of the age. Even though circular timepieces dominated again in the 1950s, we still have a soft spot for hard edges and sharp corners. Now we have the watch to prove it. The stunning 22-jeweled Stauer Moderne features a goldenhued, stainless steel rectangular case that frames a dramatic, antique white face. Exaggerated Roman numerals stretch to the edges, surrounding a trio of complications in the center. Clustered near the main Breguet-styled hands are eyes for the day of the week and the date as well as a 24-hour dial with sun and moon indicator. Water resistant to 3 ATM.
